Performed and Recorded by Dr. Matthew Cataldi, March 2019
Structure: Single Movement Sonata Form
Program Notes:
Piano Sonata No. 1 is my first piano sonata which encapsulates both the lyrical and technical elements on the piano. It is centered in C Major with multiple occurring modulations throughout the development of the A and B themes. Pianistic qualities hold the piece together creating a sweet and delicate texture. The opening motif is structured like a string orchestra playing with the fullness within the chords and harmonies. This orchestral-like texture is kept as a cadential point at the end of each section. In keeping things simple, the form and harmonic structures are kept traditionally.
