Program Notes:
The expectation when the words “mixed meter” and “multi-meter” come up in music is this idea of moving back and forth against two meters with different characteristics, such has duple vs triple. In this example of multi-metered music, the piece combines a duple (4/4) and an unusual meter (7/8) into a single entity. This piece is called “Epic” due to the evolving rhythmic and meter structure of 4 against 7. The melodic material is centered in duple while the underlying static parts and percussion each do their own thing in a disagreeing lopsided 7/8 figure using 3+2+2, 2+3+2, and 2+2+3 at different times while the opening piano part holds the ground for a sense of duple, striking every four beats.
