Duet No. 5: Dance Suite for two Clarinets
I. Prelude
II. Minuet
III. Sarabande
IV. Gigue
Dance Suite for two Clarinets was composed in the fall of 2019 and is a Baroque styled suite in four movements, a prelude, minuet, sarabande, and gigue. As I stated in my mission, advancement of original clarinet compositions is something I find important. As a college student, I am always trying to find new music that is both, playable and practical to play in my clarinet lessons, but also difficult enough to keep me interested. At the end of the day, there are not a lot of duets for clarinet that fulfilled my expectations, so I made my own.
Each movement I composed was modeled after that of the Bach Cello Suite No. 1, a piece I performed on my senior clarinet recital in 2019. The form of each movement is pretty standard and straight forward as it would be in the Baroque era. The rhythm is kept fairly simple as rhythmic progression or showcase was not the point. The point is in the melodic and harmonic development through using modern tonalities and techniques. Another technique I used in the suite was featuring both players and sometimes even making an illusion that only one person is playing, when both are playing.
Recording of the "Minuet" is coming soon!
